Sensei James Harlan
James Harlan has been involved in Wado Ryu martial arts for 52 years. He began in Nashville, Tenn at Trevecca Nazarene University to learn self defense. He was told by his original karate instructor to “Take your money to buy some chips and soda, stay home and watch TV, because you’re not getting this”. That instructor left Nashville and so it began that Mr. C.T. Patterson took over that class. Mr. Patterson was a man with positive only attitude.
As an ordained minister, Mr. James Harlan came to Ephrata, Pa. to begin his journey being a minister as well as a martial arts instructor. For 40 years Sensei Harlan taught classes in Lancaster County, and also helped many struggling people, couples, and families with counseling.
As a karate instructor, Sensei James Harlan has produced many black belts. He was/is not a person who enjoyed participating in tournaments, but enjoyed judging them annually traveling to Nashville for the USEWF tournaments as well as participating in seminars by Wado Ryu leaders coming to Nashville. He is not big on fanfare, just wants to practice, learn, and teach Wado Ryu martial arts.
